Resumen
Este artículo examina el sermón Of Religious Melancholy (1692) del obispo anglicano John Moore como un testimonio clave en la configuración moderna de la subjetividad religiosa. Predicado ante la reina María II de Inglaterra en la corte de Whitehall, el texto aborda la experiencia de la tristeza espiritual en creyentes devotos mediante una articulación compleja de registros teológicos, médicos, antropológicos y político-eclesiológicos. El estudio sitúa la melancolía religiosa en el contexto de la Inglaterra postreformada y la pone en diálogo tanto con tradiciones previas —desde la acedía monástica hasta la teología puritana— como con los discursos emergentes de la Ilustración. Se sostiene que Moore elabora un enfoque integral del alma melancólica que no solo responde a las ansiedades espirituales de su tiempo, sino que también anticipa modelos pastorales, psicológicos y médicos posteriores. En este sentido, su sermón participa activamente en la transición desde una comprensión eminentemente espiritual del sufrimiento interior hacia una concepción moderna de los afectos religiosos, caracterizada por su creciente interdisciplinariedad y progresiva secularización.
