This monograph is final stage of a work started in 2014. Back then, Carolina Guzmán-Valenzuela (Universidad de Chile) and José J. Barba (Universidad de Valladolid) started the project of writing and reflecting on the qualitative research, in order to question it, to expand its scope and to make clear that the debate about such a research approach implies some challenges and requires more spaces among the scholarship, so that it may become an object of study per se. In that time, the journal magis opened a space and commissioned the editors to carry out such task, which resulted in the monograph ‘Dilemmas and Challenges in the Qualitative Research. Some Answers from the Research Itself’.
This first monograph was greatly welcomed. In the Latin-American world, it is still widely quoted and has become a sort of benchmark on this subject-matter. Despite the strong efforts to publish this monograph, together with José J. Barba, we knew that the work had not been completed. Due to the favorable reception, soon in 2015 we started some conversations to conduct a continuation to the first edition. In January 2016, just in developing such work, José, suddenly died.
This second monograph is firstly a tribute to our dear colleague José, who developed a short but intense career in education research. José was inclined, not only to use a qualitative approach for his researches, but also to make sense of what a qualitative research is. And how to implement it rigorously in educational and social contexts. A great deal of his work and legacy is compiled in the first article of this monograph written by Barba-Martín (brother), Gómez, and González-Calvo. Throughout José’s personal and professional trajectory, the authors examine the relationship between theory and practice in education and discuss how a critical perspective of the qualitative research can drive the transformation and blending of both aspects.
Secondly, this monograph aims to broaden and strengthen the debate on the construction of education theories based on the qualitative research, an issue that has not been dealt with enough. In countless occasions, the qualitative research is implemented from a pragmatic perspective like a set of instruments and techniques rather than an approach addressing intrinsically ontological and epistemological dilemmas. As a result, there are publications and books that describes very well what has been done in a methodological sense, though they do not necessarily question the theoretical references from which the research is formulated or the ontological issues implied therein. Such an academic production, from time to time, puts aside the debates on how the qualitative research helps to create new theories and new insights of the social reality based on different paradigms. Therefore, in this monograph we sought to prioritize the views that emphasize the (re)construction of those theories produced through the qualitative research.
The articles by David Scott and Emma Williams, from a philosophical perspective, deal with questions related to the qualitative research and the understanding of the social reality. Scott sets out some distinctions about the models and theories in use when conducting a research as well as the ways how they account for the nature of the social reality, or how they try to impact on it. Scott, from the critical realism, inquires not only into the social reality but also the models and concepts used to refer to that reality. Williams, on the other hand, examines critically the qualitative research from the phenomenological philosophy in order to address the theorization in both the social and human sciences and, in addition, questions the need to theorize (only) from a scientific perspective.
Next, the articles by María Paz Sandín and Brigitte Smit show how a theory can be developed from the qualitative research. Sandín examines the theory-driven case studies to explain the a priori use of theories when conducting a qualitative research. To illustrate it, with two empirical researches, Sandín sets forth the connections that can be established between theory and empirical practice. On the other hand, Smit contributes to the theorization on the school leadership and examines some narrative researches. To do so, she uses as a framework the appraising and ethical questions emerging from the social relationships that not always are addressed when doing qualitative researches.
The articles by Eduardo Andrés Cavieres- Fernández and Ivette Hernández-Santibañez deal with both theoretical and research questions that must be considered in the Latin-American context. In particular, Cavieres resumes the important work by Paulo Freire to study the epistemological, theoretical and methodological coherence in the Latin-American research based on the narrative researches in educational contexts. Cavieres thus emphasizes the importance of the contextualized knowledge derived from the teacher’s experience. Hernández, on the other hand, evaluates the identity of the researcher who takes part actively in the social processes he/she is working on. Hernández, in particular, reflects on the Chilean student movement and how her research on and from this issue produces a social transformation.
The last two articles in this special edition examine the construction of education theories through the empirical works and positioning not very known in Latin America. Blanca Barco and Alejandro Carrasco, from the critical realism, scrutinize the concept of causality in education and reflect on it from different paradigms. In addition, the authors illustrate the process whereby alternative causal explanations are produced through an ethnographic research about the school selection. Finally, Antonio Carlos Rodrigues de Amorim and David Scott use the “philosophy of difference” proposed by Gilles Deleuze, especially his concept of ‘rhizome’, in order to study processes of meaning heterogeneity, meaning multiplicity, and re-significations that take place during the learning processes. The authors analyze two films to illustrate their main theoretical proposals about learning.
To conclude, we express thanks to the authors for the effort and time invested in writing their papers. We also thank the reviewers, who generously gave the authors an opportunity to improve their work. In addition, we want to thank twice for the space and support provided by magis, which allowed us to put on the academic spotlight a significant mission like this: to debate on the relationship between theory and qualitative research. We expect that these articles be advantageous to our readers, not least those researchers in formation, who will go through a path of lights and shadows. Finally, there is no other way to end this presentation but expressing our gratitude to José J. Barba, who was a beacon and inspiration for the qualitative researchers in formation.
In memory
magis is a space suitable for the researchers to debate, reflect and problematize about the qualitative research through their works. We confirmed it after the special edition in 2014: Dilemmas and Challenges in Education Qualitative Research. Some Answers from the Research Itself. It was coordinated by Carolina Guzmán and José J. Barba. That special edition was greatly welcomed abroad by the qualitative researchers, which encouraged both of them to think about the production of this newer special edition. Sadly, José died on January 11, 2016, very excited for coordinating this newer special edition that we publish today, as a tribute for him.
José was a qualitative researcher devoted to the idea of transforming the education at every extent. He always drove his efforts to combine his will for a social and educational transformation with his concern about giving a voice and choice power to the people making part of those transformations. According to José, the qualitative research was a way to help the people around him and to learn from each other. The criticism to his work allowed him to keep making progress towards his aim and looking for spaces like the special edition he conducted for our journal, which other researchers could use do a critical work of reflection. José was my friend, my colleague and a beacon for those who had the opportunity to share times with him. Sorrowfully, but plenty of gratitude and pride for having path the road side by side with him, we dedicated this special edition in his memory.
