Abstract

The general theory of systems and contemporary system analysis pro vide an altemative way of approaching the supply chain issue (SC), which has been traditionally analyzed using methodologies which are appropriate for organizational management. Systems theory provides the tools for interpreting the supply chain as a global system, consisting of a series of elements with various characteristics and multiple relationships through which they fulfill a specific task. This article is intended to show how a generic SC can be conceived as an open system by analyzing its main characteristics, thus presenting a new perspective for a more global and integral understanding of SC's.
