Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The article is written in English or Spanish. The paper will be published in English, for these reason, when paper will be aproved, the authors should to translate or make a certificated professional English review on their own.
  • The reviewing versions come without the name of the authors and without the acknowledgment section to assure a blind review. Fill the authors information form.
  • The text carries out with the bibliographic and style requirements indicated in the author guidelines and it has not been previously published.
  • The manuscript has not been published, neither has been sent to other journal (or if it has, an explanation has been written in the Commentaries to editor).
  • The manuscript sent is in a format .doc or .docx
  • The ORCID of the authors is included (if you don't have it you must register in the platform ORCID). We also suggest to update the authors profiles in Google Scholar and Colciencias (CvLAC).

Author Guidelines

General information

The journal Ingeniería y Universidad: Engineering for Development is edited by the School of Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. Ingeniería y Universidad: Engineering for Development aims to promote and disclose novel and relevant research work in the field of engineering.

The journal is aimed at engineering students, professional engineers, researchers, and more broadly, anyone interested in scientific and technological developments in engineering. The journal publishes only manuscripts in the English language. 

Topics of interest

Ingeniería y Universidad: Engineering for Development publishes scientific contributions and technological developments in the different areas of Engineering. The journal especially welcomes articles on topics related to robotics and industrial automation, bio-engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering and transportation engineering, and logistics.

Types of contributions

Original articles are particularly welcome, but also review articles and commentaries are considered.

Submission process (Guide in English  |  Guide in Spanish)

Contributions must be submitted through the Open Journal System (OJS) platform: http://revistas.javeriana.edu.co/index.php/IyU/index. To submit manuscripts authors must first register. During the submission process, authors will be required to provide suitable independent reviewers to speed up the process. Authors must send manuscripts following the journal’s structure, format, and reference system.

All contributions must comply with the following specifications:

• Fill the authors information form (Download here).

• Articles must be submitted in electronic format using a text editor, preferably MS Word.

• Articles should be written in Times New Roman, size 12, single-spaced. A maximum of 5400 words including references is acceptable.

• Articles should have a single column with justified text. 

• All graphs, figures, and illustrations should be located in the article, indicating titles and source and in a low resolution.

• In addition, all graphs, figures, and illustrations must be submitted as separate files using a high-quality format.

Abstract (See template)
The abstract must not exceed 200 words. It should be concrete and include the main results of the contribution. (See suggestion for abstract)

The abstract or summary should be structured. It consists of a paragraph formed by a set of sentences or short sentences that describe the most relevant of each part of the manuscript, the following sections: Objective; Methods and materials; Results and discussion; Conclusions and Keywords.

Example:

Objective: This research aims to observe the extent to which several surface treatment techniques increase the surface roughness of titanium alloy implants which was manufactured via electrical discharge machining (EDM). The effects of these techniques were also observed to decrease the Cu content on the implant surface. Materials and Methods: In this research, ultrasonic cleaning, rotary tumbler polishing, and brushing were employed as techniques to increase the roughness of a titanium implant which was manufactured via EDM, to the moderately rough category, and to reduce the contaminant element deposited on its surface. An MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yr)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay test was also used to observe the effect of these engineered specimens with respect to mesenchymal stem cells’ proliferation. Results and Discussion: The results show that ultrasonic cleaning and rotary tumbler polishing created a significant increase (90% and 67%, respectively) in the surface roughness. On the other hand, brushing was shown to be the best benchmark for reducing the contamination of Copper (Cu). Furthermore, rotary tumbler polishing and brushing can increase the percentage of living cells compared to the original surface EDM specimens. Conclusion: All micro-finishing methods that were employed are able to increase the surface roughness of Ti alloy based-implant to a moderately rough category.

Writing style

The writing must be straightforward and technical. The International Unit system should be employed. All abbreviations and acronyms must be explained the first time they appear in the text. Equations and other numerical expressions must be numbered in sequence.

In the body of the article, the references must be cited according to the IEEE citation style (See manual).

Following the quoted sentence a sequential numbering within brackets after space, in the same line of text
and before any punctuation is used. Each number corresponds to a reference containing information from the cited source. Each work cited should be separated by a semicolon (;). For example:

         As affirmed by Bettan [1]; Bettan and Hassan [4]-[9]; and Barrera [12], the wear of the material is due to the silica content in the raw material.

The numbers in brackets may also be used as nouns:

         As shown in [1], [4] - [9] and [12], the wear of the material is due to the silica content in the raw material.

It is necessary to use et al. if three or four authors are mentioned:

         According to Wong et al. [3], [10], wavelet packet division multiplexing (WPDM) using discrete wavelet packet decomposition...

References

In this section all references should be included, they must be correctly cited in the text. For the citation of bibliographical references according to the IEEE citation style (See manual)

• The reference list should be presented in the order in which the sources are cited, i.e., in numerical order, not in alphabetical order by the first author. At the start of each new source, an identifier number in brackets (the same used in the text) is used.

• The list of references should provide the necessary information to identify and to recover the sources used.

• It is essential that every one of the quotes that have been inserted in the text has its corresponding reference in the final list, and conversely, any entry in the list of references should be cited within the text.

• First and middle names should be abbreviated by putting only initials.

• It is mandatory to reference the names and initials of all authors of a work. However, if the work has more than six (6) authors, the first author followed by expression et al. (in italics) will be referenced.

• For anonymous works, the first element of the reference will be the title.

• If the author is an organization, the name should be indicated as it appears in the source.

• References should keep the original language of the publication.

• To indicate the page range use “pp.” (pp. 111-122); to indicate a single page use “p.” (p. 111).
