Abstract

The article reflects on the practice of medicine and the attitude of the physician, who must see their patient as a complete human being and consider all relevant aspects of their care. It also contemplates the attitude in the relationship with students at any level in the teaching practice.

The physician must be scientific, critical, precise, and methodical, but at the same time, they must be humane, considering all relevant aspects of the patient, their environment, and their circumstances. This is why we talk about the combination of science and art.

The goal of practicing medicine should be to provide the patient with a good quality of life, not just a longer lifespan. However, when curative resources are exhausted, the aim should shift to offering the patient a good quality of death, which still involves medical care (such as pain and symptom management) but also includes addressing anxiety, and concerns, and seeking psychological, spiritual, and religious well-being in all possible areas.

The physician will always have teaching responsibilities, whether with their patient and family or students of various levels. This responsibility must also be exercised with humanity, respect, and interest in others' circumstances.
