Abstract
Recent discussions on the environmental impact of inhaled anesthetics have relied heavily on Global Warming Potential (GWP) and CO₂-equivalent metrics. This Letter to the Editor re-evaluates these approaches in light of emerging evidence from climate physics and anesthesiology. It is highlighted that short-lived halogenated anesthetics, such as desflurane, exhibit atmospheric behaviors fundamentally different from long-lived greenhouse gases, resulting in small, stable, and reversible temperature effects rather than cumulative warming. It is also summarized recent climate modeling studies that challenge common analogies comparing anesthetic use to vehicle emissions. Overall, this letter advocates for a more nuanced, evidence-based interpretation of environmental impact that balances sustainability goals with the preservation of clinically essential anesthetic options.
