Resumen
Este artículo es la primera parte de una reinterpretación de la filosofía del lenguaje ordinario (en su versión original, desarrollada en Oxford tras la segunda guerra mundial) a la luz de su situación histórica. Me concentro en el legado de la figura más destacada de este movimiento, J. L. Austin. A falta de una lectura de su filosofía situada históricamente, con frecuencia se considera a Austin poco más que una ilustre figura del pasado. Sostengo que la filosofía de Austin es parte de un movimiento fundado en Oxford a finales del siglo XIX, refutando así la extendida idea de que la filosofía del lenguaje ordinario se originó después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial; también refuto el prejuicio de acuerdo con el cual la filosofía del lenguaje ordinario es una extensión de la filosofía del Wittgenstein tardío. Esta propuesta prepara el terreno para futuras aplicaciones de las ideas de Austin a temas contemporáneos.
