Abstract
Se analizan las condiciones naturales, sociales y económicas que han influido enla construcción de la vulnerabilidad al impacto de inundaciones en el cantón de
Corredores, ubicado en el límite de la frontera de Costa Rica con Panamá. Es una
llanura aluvial, ocupada por plantaciones bananeras pertenecientes a la United
Fruit Company desde 1930 hasta 1984. El retiro de esta compañía generó conflictos
sociales, la ocupación de terrenos cerca de los cauces de ríos, la expansión de la
palma aceitera y en 1988 es azotado por los efectos indirectos del huracán Juana.
Estos factores marcan el desarrollo del cantón, predominando el marco natural en
que se desenvuelven. La metodología utilizada incluye la revisión de diversas fuentes
documentales, estadísticas y orales.
