Abstract
During the early 1930’s complex Bogota’s society was confronted with a new professional activity know as urbanism. This occupation, however, was a one and could be understood divergently in different cities around the world. This article seeks to analyze the strategy implemented by Karl Brunner and a group of local technicians and professionals of architecture and engineering in order to establish the institutional, academic and professional bases of urbanism in the Colombian capital. The research explores the conformation of the Urbanism Department of Bogotá. It also studies the role played by the National University and its academic journal Ingeniería y Arquitectura. And it analyzes the publication and diffusion of Brunner’s book the Manual de Urbanismo. It demonstrates that these elements were key issues that explain the action strategy by which an urbanism professional configuration was constituted in Bogota and it shows how a particular group of professionals accomplished to dominate it.
