Abstract
This article explains how the ideas of the modern movement influence the state architecture constructed in the city of San Juan, during the process of reconstruction after the earthquake in 1944, within the framework of the socio-political events, the architectonic ideas and techniques of the period. This is particularly focused on the study of avenida Paseo Central, a civic-institutional axis, inexistent in the foundational grid, and site for the main public, post-earthquake buildings, which makes up the paradigmatic expression of this modernity, putting a seal on the character of the new city. The methodology consists of three integrated stages: pre- figurative, configurative and re-figurative. They allow the comparison between the urban and architectonic proposals developed by the State and its realization in the real field, showing how private interests and governmental policies affect the formation of the axis and how the principles of the Modern Movement become evident in the official construction.
