Abstract
Los estudios enfocados a la expansión de las áreas urbanas deben revisar además de los movimientos poblacionales y las actividades económicas dentro del territorio, las transformaciones morfológicas, estructurales y funcionales que estos originan. Este estudio revisa la expansión de una ciudad intermedia mexicana a partir de los bajos niveles de movilidad que genera la fragmentación del espacio urbano, afectando a miles de familias que residen en los asentamientos periféricos de las ciudades latinoamericanas con escaso acceso a los servicios de infraestructura, insumos básicos y a una educación de calidad; dadas las pésimas condiciones topográficas en que generalmente se ubican las colonias de origen irregular y dificulta la posibilidad de contar con una red vial que garantice un eficiente servicio de transporte público
