Abstract
El objetivo del trabajo es presentar algunas reflexiones sobre la configuración de un nuevo campo de investigación en las ciencias sociales agrarias, organizado en torno de los organismos genéticamente modificados (OGM), tomando como base los trabajos presentados en el X Congreso Mundial de Sociología Rural (Brasil, 2000). Desde el punto de vista de la disciplina, éstos ponen de manifiesto la conexión entre el interés académico y el debate público, así como la consolidación de un área más general de investigación en la sociología rural, representada por la esfera del consumo. Se plantea sin embargo, que resulta de fundamental interés la generación de un mayor nivel de conocimiento sobre los impactos de estas nuevas tecnologías sobre la diversidad de agentes involucrados en la producción agraria, especialmente en los países en desarrollo, y su consideración en las políticas egulatorias hacia los OGM.
