Abstract
El presente trabajo propone analizar la mirada de un hombre que a fines de siglo XIX combinó la práctica del viaje tierra adentro con la escritura. Ese hombre es el político, militar y escritor Filiberto de Oliveira Cézar, quien escribió y publicó una serie de relatos sobre el «desierto» argentino del siglo XIX, donde narra las aventuras de un grupo de expedicionarios, sus itinerarios por geografías desconocidas, así como sus relaciones con individuos diferentes a ellos. El centro de atención del trabajo lo ocupan las imágenes, provenientes de artistas reconocidos de la época. A partir de allí, se busca ponerlas en relación con el discurso escrito. Una idea principal recorre la investigación: las imágenes, lejos de ser meras ilustraciones del texto o registro fiel de lo visto, instauraron y construyeron un modo de ver al otro cultural, que articula discursos y trasunta ideologías particulares.
