Abstract
At the end of the 19th century, traditional music was one of the few diversions in Colombian social life. The Bogotá Social Gatherings, therefore, incorporated the use of traditional music to develop strong relationships between those in attendance. The gatherings constituted one of the most important practices of communication and human interaction in Colombia. These gatherings promoted social life through conversation, the appreciation of aesthetic beauty and the performance of live folkloric music. Nevertheless, the influx of new technologies transformed Colombian traditional music. As a result, the cultural purpose of the gatherings changed.
