Abstract

This article analyzes the role of alternative newspapers in Brazil (Caros Amigos, Fato Brazil, Le Monde Diplomatique and Forum Magazine) in the Brazilian public sphere. Using the concept of public opinion formation of Walter Lippmann, the consensus building of Noam Chomsky and the distinction between freedom of expression and freedom of the press, it is concluded that the fact that these newspapers broaden the agenda and the range of sources normally offered by the hegemonic media, contributes to strengthening democracy.
