Abstract

Predictors of the type of parental mediation of Internet use were investigated, in particular, age, gender, educational level, residence, digital skills and caregivers' risk perception, together with variables related to minors (age, gender and digital skills). Likewise, the predictive effect of the types of mediation on the opportunities and risks of contact was estimated, also considering the aforementioned variables. The data were taken from the Kids Online Costa Rica Survey, applied to a sample composed of 1008 caregivers (average age = 40,46; 78,9% female) and 1008 children and adolescents between 9 and 17 years of age (M = 12,75; 50,6% female). Results: digital skills and age of the child are relevant predictors of the type of mediation; active mediation predicts opportunities, restrictive mediation reduces the chances of risk, while monitoring mediation seems to be applied in the presence of risk.
