Abstract

La fundación de la Provincia del Nuevo Reino y Quito, cuyo IV Centenario se celebra este año 2004, tuvo principio en la venida, en 1598, desde México, del arzobispo de Santa Fe, don Bartolomé Lobo Guerrero, acompañado de los padres Alonso de Medrano y Francisco de Figueroa. Navegando en un pequeño navío de Cuba a Cartagena, cerca de Jamaica, estuvieron a punto de naufragar por una tempestad huracanada. En el mayor peligro, el padre Figueroa introdujo en el mar una reliquia de Ignacio de Loyola e invitó a todos a invocarle. Al grito de “¡Ignacio!” la tempestad calmó de repente. Lobo Guerrero mandó hacer, en Santa Fe, información del hecho en orden al proceso de beatificación de Ignacio de Loyola, entonces en curso.
