Abstract
Debido al irrefutable fundamento bíblico, evangélico y teológico de la “opción por los pobres” –marca registrada de la teología latinoamericana de la liberación–, y dada la fuerza de su propia evidencia interna, la única posibilidad de combatirla ha sido la estrategia de desnaturalizarla, y convertirla en “preferencial”. Con ello se pretende que su fundamento fuese la “gratuidad” de Dios, con lo que resultaría susceptible de ser desplazada al campo de la caridad asistencialista políticamente conservadora. Algunos teólogos de la liberación parecen haberse acomodado a esa estrategia. El autor la denuncia y muestra que la opción por los pobres no es preferencial, sino alternativa y exclusiva, y que no se basa en la gratuidad de Dios, sino en su justicia.
