Abstract
El término "postmodernismo" fue acuñado por primera vez en los años treinta para describir reacciones menores ante'el modernismo en las artes. Su uso se extendió en los años cincuenta y sesenta con el fin de abarcar fenómenos cada vez más amplios en las artes, especialmente en ciertos tipos de eclecticismo en el campo de la arquitectura. Llegó a convertirse en un -término aglutinador de las corrientes artísticas que pretendían derribar los límites existentes entre el arte y la vida cotidiana, entre las culturas superiores y las inferiores o populares; esto introdujo una cierta promiscuidad de estilos y de códigos" en la que se mezclan la parodia, la imitación, la ironía, y el juego; y se insiste en la ausencia de profundidad y en la relevancia paradójica de la superficialidad.
