Abstract
Una de las caracterfsticas más sobresalientes del catolicismo latinoamericano es su devoción a la Virgen María.
Virgilio Elizondo llega a afirmar que "es un hecho innegable que la devoción a María es la característica del cristianismo latinoamericano más popular, persistente y original. Ella está presente en los mismos orígenes del cristianismo en el Nuevo Mundo. Desde el principio, la presencia de María confirió dignidad a los esclavizados, esperanza a los explotados y motivación para todos los movimientos de liberación. Incluso dejando de lado su interpretación, no se puede negar el hecho de la devoción a María"!.
