Abstract

Colombian society currently undergoes a process of secularization, that is to say, a process in which the social spheres are different and autonomous. Based on an extensive empirical research, this paper presents such a process, which has gone hand-in-hand with cultural transformations. Among these last ones, we can highlight the reconstruction of religious affiliations. Secularization and pluralization have had paradoxical effects due to the fact that they have not provoked the decline of religion; on the contrary, they have rekindled religious practices, like competition between Catholic Church and the new religious movements regarding the faithful loyalty and commitment of the faithful.
