Abstract

That which is implied in the Torah as “health” and “illness” is not completely related to current Western culture perception of the issue. In ancient Israel, Yahweh is the main agent of its health and wellbeing; and the fulfillment of the Torah is prophylaxis against all kinds of health problems. It is this religious framework the one which allows the understanding of the biological dysfunction and the health problems mentioned in the Torah (infertility, physical disorders, skin diseases…) based on what the modern anthropology of health understands as the three dimensions of health problems: the biological one (disease), the subjective one (illness), and the social one (sickness).
