Abstract
Los luctuosos hechos acaecidos el 11 de septiembre de 2001 en Estados Unidos de América, y los horrendos y numerosos crímenes que vienen sucediendo en no pocos países de América Latina, como Colombia y Brasil, han puesto de nuevo sobre el tapete el polémico debate acerca de la legitimidad de la pena de muerte. De otra parte, prominentes sectores de la comunidad humana y de la catolicidad se vienen manifestando en favor de la abolición total de la pena capital, y Juan Pablo II está convocando a la conformación universal “de un acuerdo para abolir la pena de muerte, que es cruel e innecesaria”. En el presente artículo se desarrollan diversos aspectos de este debate desde una óptica ético-teológica.
