Abstract
Es una opinión común que la enseñanza social de la Iglesia comienza en 1891 con la "Rerum Novarum" como respuesta tardía al pensamiento social revolucionario marxista.
Sin embargo, la lectura de los Santos Padres nos muestra una primera explicitación de la enseñanza social de la Iglesia, tal como se halla contenida en las Escrituras. La enseñanza social de los Pontífices Contemporáneos no es un invento de ellos, sino una de las aplicaciones a la situación socio-económica actua del espíritu de justicia, caridad y respeto al hombre, esencial al cristianismo, y contenido en las Escrituras y en la Tradición.
