Abstract
In his introduction to Kierkegaard's Psychology (1972), Nordentoft argues that the psychological reception of the Danish thinker's work was possible thanks to existential psychology, developed in Europe in the 1930s and introduced in the USA in the 1950s. In this framework, he highlights the works of Rollo May and Preston Cole, but does not mention the one who was the precursor of the reading of Kierkegaard as a psychologist: Karl Jaspers. It is only in 1981 that Theunissen makes it clear that, although in the first edition of the work that earned him the chair of Psychology in Heidelberg, Allgemeine Psychopathologie (1913), Jaspers did not yet mention Kierkegaard, he would do so in later editions and also in Psychologie der Weltanschauungen (1919). We will analyze the reception of Kierkegaard in Jaspers' “psychological works”, since the German author determined the reading that existential psychology and phenomenological psychiatry made of the Danish author.
