Abstract
This paper is a study of the Hobbesian conception of liberty, placed in tension with the typological approaches of Benjamin Constant, Isaiah Berlin, and Quentin Skinner regarding the semantic multiplicity of the concept. This work aims to show how liberty and obedience are harmonized within the conceptual framework of the Leviathan when it is interpreted beyond the paradigm of negative liberty and brought into dialogue with alternative approaches such as modern liberty, positive liberty, and republican liberty. Our discussion begins by outlining the liberal traits of Hobbes’s ‘negative’ concept of liberty, continues by showing in what sense the self-determination of the Hobbesian individual and of the Leviathan itself resembles the republican rudiments of the ‘positive’ concept of liberty, and concludes by reviewing Hobbes’s contribution to the paradigm of ‘prudential’ virtue as a modern mediator between personal autonomy and state authority.
