Abstract
The following article proposes a contemporary reading of autobiography within the framework of Wilhelm Dilthey’s philosophy of life. Three lines of analysis comprise the development of this reflection: autobiography, inscribed in lived experiences, as the philosophical foundation of human life, the comprehensive character of autobiography, and the emotional nature of autobiographical expression. Beyond highlighting the relevance of autobiography in Dilthey’s thought, the route charted for this research introduces autobiography as a comprehensive practice inherent to the development of social and historical communication. Autobiography is meditating, reliving in order to understand. Far from being limited to a literary genre, from the perspective of this study, autobiography reveals the essence of human understanding: the expression of a constant dialogue, of a spiritual voice built from shared experiences.
