Abstract
Las microalgas son fuentes de biomoléculas y metabolitos de importancia económica y constituyen una fuente directa de alimento, medicamentos y biocombustible, entre otras aplicaciones. El territorio de La Guajira (Colombia) presenta condiciones propicias para el desarrollo y producción de microalgas a nivel industrial. Particularmente se resalta el interés en dirección de la producción de ácidos grasos esenciales para la salud humana, así como en la investigación sobre la obtención de aceites para la creciente industria de los biocombustibles de tercera generación. Este trabajo buscó por un lado, avanzar en el desarrollo de subproductos de origen microalgal a escala industrial en Colombia utilizando sistemas de cultivos cerrados que no compiten con la producción de alimento humano sobre suelos de uso agrícola y por otro lado, destacar el beneficio ambiental que esta producción representa.
