Abstract
En la zona fronteriza de la República Dominicana con Haití, la leña se usa comocombustible doméstico y para pequeñas industrias como panaderías. Habitantes de
la zona mencionaron ocho árboles y arbustos como especies preferidas para leña,
destacándose Acacia macracantha y la especie endémica Acacia scleroxylon.
Criterios importantes eran que la leña dure mucho tiempo en el fuego, que dé
buena brasa, y que no produzca humo. Con la intensidad actual del uso de leña,
no se considera que sea un factor importante de deforestación en la zona en este
momento. Esta situación podría cambiar si aumenta la demanda de carbón vegetal.
Dada la capacidad de rebrote de varias de las especies, se recomienda desarrollar
sistemas de uso sustentable basados en el manejo del rebrote, y establecer
plantaciones de uso múltiple.
