Abstract

Como Cuba todavía no se había independizado en el siglo diecinueve, el surgimiento de una literatura nacional siguió una ruta diferente, tal y como lo ejemplifica la novela Cecilia Valdés (1882). Su autor, Cirilo Villaverde, participó en la lucha contra el dominio español y sufrió prisión y exilio por ello; su novela presenta al gobierno metropolitano y a los españoles bajo una luz negativa pero estaba en contacto con la literatura española del momento. La obra de Villaverde muestra que la naciente literatura nacional cubana estaba contra España en términos políticos, pero que no aspiraba a romper con la literatura peninsular para establecer su independencia.
