Abstract
Este ensayo forma de parte de una exploración de los debates en torno a los derechos naturales del hombre que tuvieron lugar en la esfera pública hispanoamericana a mediados del siglo XIX. En Colombia, como en muchos países de la región, aquellas polémicas estuvieron relacionadas con las guerras civiles entre liberales y conservadores que se propagaron alrededor del año 1848. El poeta romántico Julio Arboleda Pombo (1817-1862), jefe militar y pensador católico, fue una figura central de aquellas disputas doctrinales y aquellas guerras civiles. En su obra poética y periodística, es posible leer la emergencia de un conservadurismo posrepublicano que gravitaría sobre la esfera pública y el campo intelectual neogranadinos durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX.
