Abstract
El presente ensayo se plantea como meta estudiar las estrategias discursivas empleadas por una buena parte de la intelectualidad latinoamericana para desafiar los acelerados cambios que se estaban produciendo en la sociabilidad urbana a fines del siglo XIX. En particular, el artículo explora las modalidades retóricas ade las que echaron mano los hombres de letras de la época para calificar los límites del término “democracia”, con la esperanza de que estas intervenciones discursivas acotaran el acceso a los espacios de influencia en los que nuevos actores sociales pugnaban por ingresar.
