Abstract
El presente artículo analiza cómo las novelas nacionales del siglo XIX en Venezuela representan los conflictos asociados con la implementación del modelo liberal en un país dominado por fuerzas que lo aferran a sistemas del pasado colonial que se pretende borrar. El autor sostiene que la novela decimonónica venezolana trasciende la representación de espacios territoriales con una orientación nativista y costumbrista y que también se inscribe en las discuciones nacionalistas en relación con la necesidad de modernizar y de incorporar a la nueva nación al ámbito internacional. Para hacerlo, según el autor, la república requiere no solamente de claras definiciones territoriales y de asignaciones económicas a dichos territorios dentro de la ideología liberal del progreso, sino además de la creación de una literatura que elabore un imaginario de nación en el cual se consoliden los espacios territoriales, se creen tradiciones, se rinda culto a los héroes nacionales (los padres de la patria), se discurra en torno de quiénes pertenecen o no a la nación y se narrativice el acceso al progreso y a la modernización.Cuadernos de Literatura is registered under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License.
