Unas veces los presentaban como Cherna y Juana. Otras veces los presentaban como Juana y Cherna. '"¿Cual aficionado a los cancioneros Impresos no recuerda aquellas estampas de cándido primitivismo, animadas por el Cherna y la Juana?; estampas que hoy, apunto de morir el siglo, se tendrían por bobas e insustanciales, por caricaturas de untrazo ingenuo, rememorantes de la Hispanoamérica apenas salida del agro, apenasentrada en la urbe, todavía distante de las vísperas de la modernidad. Popularísimas fueron las plebeyas caricaturas de Cherna y Juana en la América descalza, la Américaamarga, la América en español. Popularísimas fueron las canciones que regalaban a los naturales de Suramérica, del Caribe, de la América Central, del México lindo y querido.
