Abstract
Ha sido un hábito de la historiografía tradicional estudiar la crisis política del" Virreinato de la Nueva Granada y el nacimiento de la República de Colombia como resultado de un proceso bastante simple de formación de una conciencia criolla, americanista y anticolonial. Así, se ha supuesto que la construcción de la nación en nuestro medio fue el producto de una élite protonacional que concibió un discurso nacionalista, cuyas zonas internas de conflicto se limitaban a variaciones formales en torno del tipo de organización del nuevo Estado, es decir, de inmaduros enfrentamientos sobre si se debía aclimatar un sistema de gobierno federalista o, por el contrario, un centralismo autoritario.
