Abstract

Los Estudios Culturales exigen un conocimiento de los procesos históricos que han definido la sociedad actual y el modo de ser de los individuos. En un principio podemos hablar de una cultura mestiza, cohesionada por elementos ibéricos, amerindios y africanos (siglo XV). Posteriormente, y de acuerdo con los planteamientos de W. Mignolo (1995), se dice que aparece "una conciencia americana emanada del hemisferio occidental y definida por la Doctrina Monroe" (siglo XIX). Finalmente, ocurre el denominado proceso de expansión imperialista, el cual enfatiza y agudiza las diferencias entre América del norte, América central y América del sur (siglo XX).
