Abstract
Until 2018, there were different governmental programs intended to improve the public spaces in the Mexican cities. The intervention of barren and/or abandoned lands in the peripheral urban neighborhoods to be used, as sport spaces was a resource intended to improve the city, recover the social fabric, and a strategy to struggle against the urban insecurity. Based on a qualitative methodology, this article aims to explore how the public spaces in the peripheral neighborhoods have created centers for social interaction and coexistence thanks to the sport activities. Two specific cases located in peripheral zones of the cities Xalapa and Veracruz are analyzed. This work shows that the citizens play a crucial role thanks to their strategies of appropriation and use intended to save and reinvigorate these spaces in the cities.
