Abstract
Algeria is endowed with a remarkable thermal heritage, with a richness of natural sources of water, which aroused a great interest in the local and colonial populations during the 19th and 20th century. Considering the new European regulations about the improvement of hygienic services, the colonial government gave start to a large census and upgrading campaign of the existing spas and baths. Also, the government undertakes the construction of new thermal structures near old natural springs.
Starting from the postulate that thermalism is mainly a form of tourism, this study does an approach to the heritage of water, considered as a place of high cultural and touristic value, with therapeutic virtues. The systematic analysis of colonial archival sources and its confrontation with in situ investigations, allows to bring a new light on the state of the thermal spas during colonization. Moreover, it contributes to take stock of the revival of thermalism under the prism of hygienism and health tourism.
