Abstract

This analysis was done on the basis of a survey of the repertory of details shown by a modest architecture, built by and for an emerging lower middle social class in Bogotá, highlighting the dominant role played by such a repertory within the specific character of a given urban scene, clarifying its identity and conditioning the resulting urban image. The visual information is enhanced which, by means of a detailed observation of the repertory, allows the historic evolution of the barrio to be fully understood, as well the aesthetic habits and architectural fashions of its inhabitants and builders. Thereby, the role achieved by building techniques and materials is seen to be particularly important. This essay is a key to the knowledge, analysis, interpretation and assessment, not only of the architectural elements included but also of the urban context which encompasses them, thus allowing an accurate diagnostic to be made, as well as putting together a basis for a proposal for recovery for the whole urban zone. After gaining a general knowledge of the urban context, a detailed inventory and catalog of selected architectural details was chosen among the available repertory, circumscribed to a single city block, No. 14 on the barrio map.
