Abstract
Un hombre cierra los ojos y ve una bandada de pájaros y no sabe cuántos pájaros son. Supone con seguridad que no pueden ser menos de dos ni más de diez. Esta seguridad de encontrarse ante una cantidad de pájaros que él no puede definir pero que ciertamente corresponde a un número natural, le permite concluir que Dios existe. La conclusión es inesperada y ha obligado a un crítico literario a verificar el proceso lógico que conduce a ella. El mecanismo silogístico es correcto y sin embargo las palabras que le sirven de introducción son una confesión de incredulidad: un hombre cierra los ojos y ve una bandada de pájaros, cierra los ojos y lo que llamamos mundo se desvanece, y en el espacio de su imaginación, en el espacio del lenguaje, la figura de Dios asoma, ya no directamente, no como un gesto suyo, como un acto suyo, sino como la correcta conclusión de un silogismo en el que un número de pájaros es a la vez finito e inconcebible.
