Abstract
Introducción
El estudioso de la Geografía como ciencia social está o debe estar interesado en el tema de la localización; vale decir, no de la posición geográfica o ubicación absoluta de un punto o área según sus coordenadas sobre la esfera terrestre. Eso indudablemente es de interés básico y obvio. Pero la situación relativa, por razones históricas, económicas, estratégicas, por su fluidez, es un tema susceptible de ser ahondado y dilucidado. Está permanentemente sometida la posición relativa a la acción variable de factores tanto internos como externos. Con un ejemplo se ve más claro el asunto: el territorio continental de Colombia posee una posición geográfica absoluta, invariable. Sus latitudes y longitudes extremas no cambian, su enmarcamiento dentro de la malla de paralelos y meridianos no varía. Su situación relativa sí, pues una cosa era su valor económico y estratégico antes de la puesta en servicio del canal de Panamá (1914) o de la introducción del avión de propulsión a chorro después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y otra después de sucedidos tales hechos históricos.
