Abstract
A menudo, los historiadores colombianos han recurrido a las sucesivas generaciones literarias para explicar la compleja historia de su país. Los análisis se han concentrado en obras literarias (poesía y novela), en el ensayo político y, a veces, en obras que se aproximan, sin llegar a ser, a contribuciones originales al pensamiento político y social. Numerosos estudios reflejan los esfuerzos hechos por las varias generaciones para interpretar el pasado de Colombia, para corregir errores en su desarrollo social y político, o para forjar un atrevido, nuevo curso en las aventuras de política y fe. Tales comentarios indican la repetición de un tema dominante con múltiples variaciones: la búsqueda del equilibrio adecuado entre libertad y orden. El objetivo, eternamente evasivo, de una democracia estable y bien ordenada ha sido el tema fundamental del pensamiento y acción política desde el tiempo de Antonio Nariño y la generación de la emancipación de 1810 hasta la Generación del Centenario en el siglo veinte (1).
