Explicación Preliminar
Aún en lo breve de esta ocasión conviene explicar las razones y características de este trabajo. Es el caso de un geógrafo y profesor de Geografía, que por eminente necesidad de su cátedra universitaria de Geografía Humana de Colombia, hace unos años se vio precisado a realizar una investigación geográfica-histórica de archivo, de gabinete y también de campo a fin de llegar a disponer de datos seguros y de ideas claras respecto al proceso de poblamiento de Colombia y sus efectos. Dada la vastedad del tema y las indudables dificultades metodológicas, hubo de elegir un área restringida, perteneciente a una región del país bien conocida por el autor. La región fue la Provincia de Cartagena y el área tema de la investigación el Departamento del Atlántico, en tiempos coloniales denominado Tierradentro.
