Abstract
El presente artículo se propone realizar una exposición sintética de los componente principales de las historias de vida como una modalidad de la metodología cualitativa de investigación social, con menciones sobre algunos hitos de su desarrollo en diferentes épocas y países, incluido Colombia; y su triple dimensión de visión de conjunto sobre la sociedad, herramienta de trabajo y metodología de investigación. Lo anterior implica aclaración de términos, estrategias y fases de trabajo y contiene elementos estructurantes de ellas tomadas como metodología de investigación, tales como el tiempo y otros temas a considerar. Diferenciando entre historias y relatos de vida, se proponen unas y otros, ya sea en su sentido totalizador o temático, como una opción de construir o definir lo social a partir de las historias personales. Finalmente, se proponen algunos elementos sobre su uso en el proyecto de investigación Estratificación y Movilidad social en Bogotá, uno de cuyos objetivos es identificar los imaginarios que se han construido sobre la estratificación existente o promovida como política pública en la ciudad.
