Abstract
Sobre la base de escritos de hombres de la Compañía de Jesús intentaremos mostrar cómo la Orden encaró la evangelización de los indios con un enfoque racional, que se nutrió básicamente, de tres premisas, las cuales, complementándose entre sí, coadyuvaron al éxito de la labor. Por una parte, la búsqueda de soluciones que sirvieran de bisagra entre el Instituto Ignaciano y la realidad que la tarea misional americana les imponía desde fuera. Por otra, el respeto por las pautas culturales de los grupos con los que interactuaba —ya indígenas, ya españoles—. En tercer lugar, la estricta planificación de la tarea a fin de optimizar los resultados que se pretendían.
