Abstract
Los dirigentes políticos en Colombia han defendido con muy pocas excepciones, el predominio de los dos partidos tradicionales y la permanencia del bipartidismo como sistema político. A su vez han sido características fundamentales de este sistema la conformación heterogénea, policlasista, de ambos partidos; el enfrentamiento violento entre uno y otro en la lucha por el poder político; y el monopolio que han logrado mantener en el control del gobierno. Tales características han influído de manera decisiva en el desarrollo del partido liberal, que es del que se ocupa este estudio.
