Abstract
Don José Manuel Marroquín, tan controvertido por sus actua-
ciones políticas como admirado por sus dotes de escritor castizo y
ameno, no ha sido suficientemente estudiado como filólogo ni como
pedagogo, especialmente en el campo de la enseñanza de la lengua
materna. Sus opiniones a este respecto son generalmente tan acerta-
das que sorprenden al lector de hoy cuando las contrasta con las que
eran corrientes en su época. Valdría la pena estudiar sistemática-
mente, a través de su obra toda, las doctrinas pedagógicas del señor
de Yerbabuena, así como su ejercicio magisterial en la cátedra y el
libro.
