Abstract

This paper intends the process that leads Ricœur to make metaphor the main point of hermeneutics. This process goes from the hermeneutics of symbol to the hermeneutics of the word, and from there, to the hermeneutics of speech. This line of thought presupposes the linguistic nature of human experience. The first section makes an analysis of the main theories about the metaphor. The results of this section lead to a new comprehension of the symbol, which lead to a clarification of the role of the metaphor in the expression and configuration of the deepest human experiences. The second section focuses on the interpretation of speech. The paper holds as conclusion some clarifications on the concept of text an the construction of a dialectic concept of interpretation that helps to the leave behind the quarrel between comprehension and explanation. In such way it gets to the problem of the reference of the speech, thanks to the question on the truth of the metaphoric statement and to the thesis of the tensional nature of metaphoric truth.
