Abstract
El problema de la identidad personal será considerado en este artículo en tres momentos. El primero concierne a la teoría original de John Locke acerca de la identidad personal como una crítica al modo como la metafísica trata el problema de la identidad en general y la identidad de las personas en particular. El segundo momento está dedicado a la objeción de circularidad que Joseph Butler dirige contra la teoría de Locke. En él se demuestra que esta objeción está fuertemente conectada con el retorno a la metafísica.Finalmente, el tercer momento, busca explicar el modo en que Parfit rompe el círculo encontrado por Butler en la teoría de Locke sobre la identidad personal. A pesar de su originalidad, la pretensión de Parfit será considerada, en último término, como una restauracion de la teoría de Locke, esta vez actualizada con un experimento mental y terminología contempóranea.
