Abstract
This paper examines Hegel’s conceptualization of economic phenomena as a constitutive part of the development of ethical life in modern society. It analyzes his reflections on labor, mechanization, poverty, and class division, not as external or accidental elements, but as necessary moments in the unfolding of a historically determined social rationality. It is argued that Hegel does not offer normative prescriptions or models for overcoming contradictions, but rather a profound understanding of the contradictions that structure social life. Within this framework, the article proposes that such a perspective lays the groundwork for an immanent critique of economic thought, recognizing in Marx a continuation of Hegelian insights. The reading defended here thus seeks to move beyond both normative moralism and instrumentalist interpretations, opening a path to rethink economic rationality in its relation to freedom, historicity, and social conflict.
